‘All About Eve’ Review: Gillian Anderson, Lily James on the West End

All about eve london reviews

Private encounters in locked bathrooms are broadcast live on film. It all adds to the impression of superficiality. With: Gillian Anderson, Merric Boyd, Monica Dolan, Ian Drysdale, Rejiro Emasiobi, Tsion Habte, Charles Hagerty, Lily James, Jessie Mei Li, Chanelle Modi, Stuart Nunn, Julian Ovenden, Phillipa Peak, Sheila Reid, Grace Stone, Rhashan Stone, Stanley Townsend, Philip Voyzey, Michael Warburton. Another spies Eve, flustered, fending off an intrusive interview behind the bedroom door, before popping outside wearing nothing but a towel and a smile. We see the evil side of Eve slowly unveil itself as it becomes apparent she's far from being a starstruck fan or even who she says she is. And at the end we see that she, too, will be replaced.

. The plot is driven by melodramatics as a portrait on pursuing stardom through a companionship with, if not the overthrowing of an aging idol, and it's not entirely easy to buy in on them, partly because it seems as though they're compensating for natural shortcomings, which are obscured by inspired storytelling, but challenge one's investment even on paper. She blogs about film and other things in a blog called Copy and Cake and writes another, somewhat less-measured blog about feminism and heteronormativity called WhenMrWrongfeelsSoRight. It's going to be a bumpy night. Highlights of the memorial service included performances by Broadway notables like Kristin Chenoweth, Bernadette Peters, Michael Feinstein and Leslie Uggams, among others.

Driven by ambition in the case of Eve, and insecurity, terror and monumental ego in the case of Margot, these days this story of female manipulation and betrayal is kind of hard to stomach. Photos: Jan Versweyveld Mark Ludmon has been a journalist for over 20 years, specialising in writing about theatre and the arts as well as bars, pubs and drink. I don't think it's in a 'best ever' type of discussion, or worthy of its 14 Academy Award nominations, but its sharp dialog, predatory manipulation, and overall bitchiness make it entertaining, even if it's hard to like the characters. By: Andrzej Lukowski Posted: Tuesday February 12 2019 Although I am a big fan of director Ivo van Hove and Gillian Anderson, this production was disappointing for a few reasons. And Lilly James looks a lot younger than 30.

Atmosphere comes courtesy of an ethereal soundtrack by P J Harvey and a spare backstage set design from Jan Versweyveld. Featuring the occasional tropes, and driven by melodramatics which attempt to compensate for natural shortcomings, this story concept is not especially meaty on its own, but its thematic value is rich with intrigue, exploring the ambiguities of the intentions of an aspiring actress working with an idol she may be aiming to succeed, and the paranoia of an aging talent who fears that her best years are behind her, and that she is to be overpowered by new talent. Our Theatre News, Theatre Reviews and Theatre Interviews are all written with the audience in mind, helping you decide what to see next. It is just as false not to blow your horn at all as it is to blow it too loudly. Yet without reference to gender politics, or at least a nod to who held the real balance of power at a time when women had to be strong and clever and manipulative to make good on their temporary erotic capital, or any engagement with the sexist dynamics underpinning the scenario, the whole thing can come across as misogynistic.

Those portraits exert a pressure of their own, too perfect to be true. And there's enough complex characterisation to ensure neither woman complies or fits into easy stereotypes. In modern times, the actions of the characters are not particularly shocking. Eve sees herself in the same mirror morphing into Margot. Eve Harrington: I don't think I've done anything to sound off about. Taking pity on the girl, Margo takes Eve as her personal assistant. She does find a voice and life for Eve that is missing in the other performances.

And while this is playing out, we have a show about an ageing actress, undeniably a star, who is paranoid about her age, her personality, position, everything, and needs to learn the skill of true self-confidence. Broadway star Margo Channing is introduced to a super fan, and immediately takes her in and gives her a job, but while Eve seems like the perfect assistant, she has higher aspirations. This story, for all its histrionics and natural shortcomings, is conceptually solid, and Joseph L. Thanks to the star power of Gillian Anderson and Lily James, the rivalry between aging icon and rising starlet is vivid enough to banish memories of Bette Davis and Anne Baxter in the 1950 film. Gillian Anderson in All About Eve. Davis' effectiveness is limited by now-dated material, but her nuance and dramatics layers are relatively spot-on, driving the depths of this surprisingly subtle drama, but not alone, as there is enough realization on and off of the screen to drive the final product as consistently compelling.

This is the visual lexicon of femininity and stardom today, the currency of fame that gives female celebrities their value. It's ironic that Davis was such a diva that there was discord amongst the actors, and Baxter pushing her way into a 'Best Actress' nomination instead of 'Best Supporting Actress' would lead to a division of the vote and neither of them winning. That the production never finds a way to subvert or distort its own gaze — casting two beautiful screen stars without entirely disrupting their image or its own marketing campaign — only adds to the irony of having a male director at the helm and a female lead who used opening night to tweet a promotional code for her own clothing line. Gillian Anderson takes full command of the copious close ups, saying as much with facial expressions as she does in her treacly American accent. Also, in an attempt to deliver the lines with enough tired cynicism that Margo might have, Anderson falls into a repetitive, monotone performance that lacks any vigour, particularly when the character is coming off stage from a performance within the play itself.

Lily James and Gillian Anderson: All About Eve, London Review

All about is a comedy about an ambitious actress wannabe scheming her way into the life of an older actress in order to replace her. Although Lilly James is the exception to this. Van Hove has reproduced the film according to the script, while adding his usual bells and whistles technology to remind us how celebrities forfeit their privacy, and to let us in on intimate moments. All about eve is a classic and a must see. Running to 11 May 2019. I don't know what to say, because, come on, just how interesting can a drama which got nominated for 14 Oscars - scoring six, including Best Picture -, b and supposedly features a lesbian be? The kitchen seems very small and sparse for a couple of prestigious standing, and while the bathroom works for the house or dressing room but why is there a bath so prominent in a restaurant washroom? I can practically feel my eyes drying out, there are so many men somewhere out widening their eyes when I say that Anne Baxter is playing at least a pseudo-lesbian, but again, this film is from 1950, so that's the only thing they're painstakingly subtle about.

The play lacks the required high camp sensibility which defined the film and counterbalanced the tragedy, the divine bias-cut gowns and fur coats notwithstanding. Based on an iconic movie, it has attracted some big names, and employed a hugely cinematic style to its presentation, but it feels like this production should be all about the cast over everything else. The final product hasn't age completely with grace, but to be a film of its type and time, it's solid, and even to this day, it thoroughly compels, even in concept. The famed 1950 film starred Bette Davis and Anne Baxter and won six Oscars. The staging is pretty innovative, the central part of the set serving as a dressing room, or lounge. What I really liked was the woozy ambience of it all. Again and again, we see Margo and Eve fixing their faces and staring back at their reflections, sometimes holding their features aghast.

The film was full of really memorable sharp stunning performances, this adaption just doesn't have the bite, it's competent but just not exhilarating. As for the individual characters, although some of them feel like types, most all major roles are distinguished, with depths and layers that bond with the melodramatic characterization generally organically enough to augment human intrigue, which is augmented best by quite the solid cast. Three months ago I was forty years old. In the meantime we are utterly distracted by Anderson: Margo is taking off her makeup and a camera hidden in her dressing room mirror is showing us an extreme close up feed of her face, which is projected at enormous scale onto the set. Between them, these men shape the way women are seen: who gets the spotlight, in what roles and how.
