Queen and slim

There are countless Black lives that are introduced to the mainstream, and not because of their words, but because of a video or photo of their demise by the hands of police brutality. The film also runs about 15 minutes too long, and in its final moments, it veers very close to melodrama. It served as a sort of commentary on the phenomenon of white feminism, which often finds Black women's Caucasian counterparts choosing to ignore the intersectionality of equality for all. During this moment of joy, I couldn't help but notice the Black policeman in question's name tag.

There are many surface level moments of this movie that were so much more than they seemed—but be warned. It served as a sort of commentary on the phenomenon of white feminism, which often finds Black women's Caucasian counterparts choosing to ignore the intersectionality of equality for all. On a first date, a black man and woman are stopped by a policeman over a minor traffic infraction. And this assumption is what forms the basis of the movement built in their name, with black people shown as exasperated by such treatment. In that moment you're not thinking of values, you're just thinking of 'How am I gonna eat? And while it's clear that the patrons recognize them, all is well.

Some scenes are also just too fanciful - such as the one where the duo stop so Slim can ride a horse and a bizarre scene with a gas station clerk, which I think is supposed to be comic relief. As they go to take a spare car from the Shepherds' garage, a black officer stumbles upon them, but lets them go. You shouldn't be shot during a routine traffic stop. All of this works in favor of the archetypal structure. He seems sincere and friendly, but maybe also a little basic. The longer that Queen and Slim make their way across the American South, like runaway slaves in a millennial underground railroad, the more you find yourself rooting for them to get to safety.

The acting is also terrific by everyone. In March 2019, joined the cast of the film. How do we do that? For example, the movie inexplicably uses voiceover on occasion. As the film moves toward its painfully inevitable climax, Queen and Slim fulfills the promise made by Waithe and Matzoukas to create a new form of protest art. The film is in many ways an homage to victims of police brutality like Trayvon Martin and Tamir Rice—but it also forces us to face just how quickly we let tragedies like theirs dissolve into hashtags that will reappear once a year on Twitter for 24 hours. Terrified and in fear for their lives, the man, a retail employee, and the woman, a criminal defense lawyer, are forced to go on the run. In such a dangerously volatile milieu, Queen and Slim provide the spark that sets the tinderbox aflame. There are some problems though. The film lingers in its scenes. Newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith is Queen, a character who is—purposefully—brusque and analytical, the yin to the yang of Daniel Kaluuya's laid-back, slightly naïve Slim.
